The unique selling point of PODS is a platform using existing and new tests to enable people to monitor their vision on a more regular basis at a time and place that suits them. It is a device that will aid better understanding of the eye condition by the patient and support the work of both community and hospital eye care providers. It will allow early detection of disease progression and therefore earlier treatment, which usually has a better outcome and prognosis, than if delayed until the annual check-up which is often the case for many patients. PODS will be marketed in 2 models, one for home use for the western market and the other in a kiosk model for developing countries where access to eye services is limited.
Home use model will be supplied in a rechargeable container which can be connected to the mains, an indication light showing if the unit requires charging (red light) or has completely charged (green light). The device should be taken out of the box when charged and placed on the head for use. It is then activated by rotating the glasses in front of the eyes. The software will be driven by a microchip inside and the results would be linked to a web-based system or mobile network for instant report and possible referral to an appropriate eye care provider if required.
